New Orleans Pelicans Seek Third Straight Victory
New Orleans has won two in a row as they downed the Bulls in overtime Saturday to get to the .500 mark. The Pelicans are 4-2 on the road this season compared to 1-3 at home: their four game trip concludes with a trip against Toronto Thursday. New Orleans forced overtime by outscoring Chicago 26-19 in the fourth quarter, then outscored the Bulls 13-7 in the extra session. The Pelicans overcame 40.2 percent shooting from the field and 9 of 31 from beyond the arc thanks to their defense. New Orleans limited Chicago to 35.4 percent shooting overall, 11 of 42 from three point range and forced 17 turnovers. Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 27 points and 16 rebounds in the win.
The Pelicans are 16th in the league in scoring offense with 105.2 points per game. The Pelicans are 9thin rebounding with 46.6 boards per game while ranking 5th with 24.2 assists per contest. New Orleans is 15th in scoring defense as they give up 105.6 points per contest. Anthony Davis is second on the Pelicans in scoring with 27.4 points to go with 12.7 rebounds and 2.11 blocks per game. DeMarcus Cousins (28.6 points, 13.7 rebounds, 5.8 assists) playing alongside Davis is a nice 1-2 punch but the Pelicans need other guys to contribute. That means Jameer Nelson, Jrue Holiday (13.5 points, 6.2 assists), Ian Clark, Dante Cunningham, Tony Allen and E’Twaun Moore (10.2 points) all have to step up and put the ball in the hole as Davis and Cousins can’t do it alone. New Orleans is 17th in field goal percentage shooting 45.1 percent from the floor. The Pelicans are 20th with 9.9 made threes per game and stand tied for 26th in the league by converting 32.2 percent from long range this season.
Indiana Pacers Looking to Bounce Back
Indiana dropped their second straight with a loss to the Knicks to finish their three game road trip 1-2. The Pacers fell back to the .500 mark and look to get back on track after letting a lead slip away in the Big Apple. Indiana led by as many as 19 in the game and saw their lead sit at 13 at the half. Indiana was still up 12 after three quarters before getting outscored 36-17 in the final quarter to go down in defeat. The Pacers shot 46.8 percent from the floor and knocked down 12 of 25 from beyond the arc. Indiana allowed the Knicks to shoot 50 percent from the floor and lost the rebounding battle 46-34. Thaddeus Young had 18 points to lead the Pacers in the loss.
The Pacers are 4th in the league in scoring with 110.3 points a night. Indiana is tied for 19th in the league in rebounding by collecting 42.8 boards per game. The Pacers are 7th in assists with 23.6 per game but are a sieve defensively. Indiana is 23rd in the league in scoring defense, allowing 109.1 points per game. Victor Oladipo leads the Pacers with 23.8 points plus 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest. Myles Turner averages 15.7 points plus nine rebounds and 2.67 blocks per game but missed seven games with a concussion. Darren Collison (13.1 points, 7.3 assists), Thaddeus Young (14.8 points, 5.9 rebounds), Domantas Sabonis (13.5 points, 10.3 rebounds), Al Jefferson (6.7 points, 5.3 boards) and Bojan Bogdanovic (13.3 points) are contributing offensively. The Pacers have to get production from Cory Joseph, Lance Stephenson and TJ Leaf while tightening up defensively. Indiana is 3rd in the league by shooting 48 percent from the field. The Pacers are tied for 21st with 9.8 threes per game. Indiana stands 6th in the league as they’re knocking down 38.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Indiana has really had problems on the defensive end of the floor and they can’t expect to simply outscore teams on a nightly basis. The Pacers have Turner back but he’s still knocking the rust off after missing seven games. New Orleans has won two in a row and they’ve been better on the road than at home this season. Davis and Cousins have each scored 25 points and collected at least 10 boards in the same game four times already this season. Look for them to make it five as the Pelicans come up with a win here.
Pick: New Orleans Pelicans +1*
